Speculative Fiction...well? What is it? You don’t really know do you? Well that’s OK, because then there would be little point in writing this blurb. Speculative fiction is a term, attributed to Robert Heinlein in 1941, that has come to be used to collectively describe works in the genres of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. It’s an umbrella encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres, specifically science fiction, fantasy, horror fiction, weird fiction, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and alternate history in literature as well as related static, motion, and virtual arts.

The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and D.A. Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective. But soon the three find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Personal Response to Text #1: Deconstructing Visuals
I AM EXPECTED TO:
|
As English Language Arts students, it is imperative that we can make meaning of all forms of text. We are well-versed on how to accomplish this when presented with written language; yet, further work needs to be done in solidifying our understanding of visual language. This includes a set of practices by which images can be used to communicate concepts. Just as people can ‘verbalize’ their thinking, they can ‘visualize’ it. The elements in an image represent concepts in a spatial context, rather than the linear form used for words. Speech and visual communication are parallel and usually interdependent means by which humans exchange information.

UNIT REFLECTIONS & FEEDBACK
“I love short stories because I believe they are the way we live. They are what our friends tell us, in their pain and joy, their passion and rage, their yearning and their cry against injustice.” |
